Published on 2001-10-11 by National Academies Press

Autism is a word most of us are familiar with. But do we really know what it means? Children with autism are challenged by the most essential human behaviors. They have difficulty interacting with other people-often failing to see people as people rather than simply objects in their environment. They cannot easily communicate ideas and feelings, have great trouble imagining what others think or feel, and in some cases spend their lives speechless. They frequently find it hard to make friends or even bond with family members. Their behavior can seem bizarre. Education is the primary form of treatment for this mysterious condition. This means that we place important responsibilities on schools, teachers and children's parents, as well as the other professionals who work with children with autism. With the passage of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1975, we accepted responsibility for educating children who face special challenges like autism. While we have since amassed a substantial body of research, researchers have not adequately communicated with one another, and their findings have not been integrated into a proven curriculum. Educating Children with Autism outlines an interdisciplinary approach to education for children with autism. The committee explores what makes education effective for the child with autism and identifies specific characteristics of programs that work. Recommendations are offered for choosing educational content and strategies, introducing interaction with other children, and other key areas. This book examines some fundamental issues, including: How children's specific diagnoses should affect educational assessment and planning How we can support the families of children with autism Features of effective instructional and comprehensive programs and strategies How we can better prepare teachers, school staffs, professionals, and parents to educate children with autism What policies at the federal, state, and local levels will best ensure appropriate education, examining strategies and resources needed to address the rights of children with autism to appropriate education. Children with autism present educators with one of their most difficult challenges. Through a comprehensive examination of the scientific knowledge underlying educational practices, programs, and strategies, Educating Children with Autism presents valuable information for parents, administrators, advocates, researchers, and policy makers.

Hattie and Owen are having so much fun in the water, and Sophie will never be able to join them. Sophie starts to think that being a mouse isn’t so special, after all. Currently there are 30 million children participating in individual or group sports - an increase of more than 10 million kids in just the last six years. Not only are more children involved with leagues, teams, and individual sports activities, but children are getting involved earlier than ever before as well. It's not uncommon for a child to begin a competitive sport by the age of 3 or 4. This leads parents of young athletes to ask themselves many questions: What sports are suitable for my child at age 4? Age 6? Age 10? What are common sports injuries for young athletes? And how can I protect my child from injury? What types of stretching and exercises can help keep my child healthy? How young should my child begin weight training? And what precautions should we take? What do I need to know about proper sports nutrition for my child? How can my child enhance his or her performance? In addition, Kids & Sports features information for specific populations: The Young, Female Athlete The Elite Athlete The Non-Athlete as Athlete The Overweight Child The Physically Challenged Child in Sports The Young Athlete With an Eating Disorder Finally, Dr. Small offers information on preventative medicine for the child athlete. Kids and Sports is the essential reference for anyone involved with children and fitness.

By:"Geoff Harvey"
Published on 2002 by Aesculus Press Ltd

Matched betting has been the quiet phenomena (although now highly publicised) of betting. It now accounts for an incredible £45m a week and is rising inexorably. Geoff Harvey, author of Successful Spread Betting and Successful Football Betting, has compiled the first-ever guide to describe the opportunities and pitfalls of electronic one-to-one gambling. Successful Matched Betting is a clear, concise yet comprehensive guide to the most modern, low-margin form of betting available. The author succinctly explains why anyone who bets simply has to discover the potential of matched betting. He details the basics and then goes on to explore the many areas where strategies can be applied to maximise returns. As the bookmaker is acting much more transparently as a broker there is no 'us and them' mentality much prevalent with ordinary fixed-odds bookmakers, so the angle is quite different from other books of this nature. The contents are arranged under key principles of matched betting. While it features examples from all sports, they are presented so that the reader gains a clear grasp of the principles underlying this most modern form of betting - and, most importantly, how to do it well. The emphasis is always towards the potential of matched betting over fixed-odds in whichever sphere is chosen.
